History of Indian Navy Day The Indian Navy was established in 1612 by the East India Company and was later renamed the Indian Navy in 1950 after India gained independence. During the Indo-Pak war in 1971, Pakistan attacked an Indian Air Base on December 3rd. In response, the Indian Navy launched ‘Operation Trident’ on the night of December 4th and 5th. This operation successfully struck the Karachi harbor, causing significant damage to the Pakistani naval capabilities. The operation involved the use of Vidyut-class missile boats, anti-submarine corvettes, and was led by Commander Babru Bhan Yadav. The attack resulted in the sinking of four Pakistani Navy ships and the destruction of the Karachi harbor fuel fields. Over 500 Pakistani Navy personnel were killed in the war. Indian Navy Day is observed to honor the achievements of the Indian Navy and to recognize the challenges faced by its personnel during times of war.
